Pesticide exposure linked to Parkinson's disease risk

Researchers at UCLA Health found that long-term residential exposure to the agricultural pesticide chlorpyrifos is associated with a 2.5 times greater risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Laboratory experiments showed that the chemical disrupts the brain's ability to clear damaged proteins, leading to the loss of dopamine-producing neurons and the accumulation of alpha-synuclein clumps in mice.

While the retrospective design cannot definitively prove causation, the combination of epidemiological data and mechanistic animal studies points to a plausible biological pathway. Given that the chemical persists in agriculture despite residential bans, tracking long-term environmental exposures remains a critical challenge for neurological health.
